Kelly J. Cleaves, DO
Physician, Adult Psychiatry
Dr. Kelly Cleaves joined the Mind Matters, PC team in 2017 after completing her Adult Psychiatry Residency, and Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and the Portland VA Medical Center, where she served as Chief Resident.
Dr. Cleaves originally hails from the Midwest; traveling west to complete her medical degree at Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California, before landing in Oregon.
Though it was difficult to pick just one specialty within medicine, she carefully chose Psychiatry for its focus on patients as people, and has been glad for it ever since.
Her interests within the field of Psychiatry are numerous, but her favorites include psychotherapy (psychodynamic, eclectic, gestalt), Women’s Mental Health, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).
She looks forward to learning more throughout her career and helping her patients build compassion for themselves and others. She chose to practice at Mind Matters, PC to provide patients the opportunity for combined therapy and medication management, and to work collaboratively with an excellent group of like-minded clinicians. She sees people from their late teens onward, and welcomes more geriatric patients!
Dr. Cleaves often gets asked what her degree, a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.), means. It is equal to an M.D. in terms of training and privileges, but also incorporates manipulation of the musculoskeletal system (similar to a chiropractor) and a holistic approach to care. While she prefers not to administer this hands-on treatment in her practice of psychiatry, given the boundaries surrounding therapy, she enjoys providing holistic care, and recommends musculoskeletal work by other professionals when needed.
When she’s not working, Dr. Cleaves loves to relax, hike, camp, ski, travel, decorate, savor Oregon cuisine, attend Portland’s festivals, practice mindfulness, and spend time with her family and friends.
